The cover sold me.Sad to say the LGBTQ romance genre is still very white and very cis-passing so novels featuring Black and other PoC as leads definitely pique my interest. Doubled that if they're historical.Unfortunately, from what I've seen of the author's backlist, there's not a lot of diverse characters which always makes me hesitant because I'm never sure if I'm going to be gritting my teeth due to bad stereotyping. Thankfully this was a KU book so no harm, no foul.With that said, this turned out to be a fairly decent read, though I'm taking one star away for lack of description of Samuel. Yes, we know he's biracial Afro-British, but that's it. The lack of description - especially when other the white characters are described - is a huge pet peeve of mine and screams lazy writing. One or two sentences would have sufficed.Anyway, Samuel is a celebrated composer and a gay man in an age and country where both things mark him as an outsider. He has no time nor place for love or middle class domesticity. He likes thumbing his nose at the upper classes who fete him on the one hand, yet treat him shabbily due to his race on the other. Cameron Oberlin is the male ingenue - fresh from the country - who's life hasn't been easy. He's barely making it, his parents want nothing to do with him because he was caught in a compromising position with their landlord, and the only thing he wants is someone to love. He wears his heart on his sleeve.There's all this derring-do and shady dealings featuring a missing fortune, an absconding wife with child, a bet, and a woman in the midst called The Black Widow.It was nice to read the author's notes at the end of the book about the fictional character Samuel is based off real life Black composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. Things like this let me know said author has done her homework. I'm hoping she'll diversify future stories. I have to say, I feel cheated by this series. There’s at least two more books to go, and the story arc never moves forward. The blurb for number ten makes it sound like there are even more to come, with the warning that it can be “skipped.” That implies more to come. I feel like I’ve wasted my time with the eight books I’ve read. The first three or four were self-contained but introduced characters that would be part of the story arc. Past that, they’ve all followed this Lady Shelby kidnapping arc that just never resolves and moves at an ant’s pace. I don’t want to waste any more time on this series. This book also followed a set of reprehensible people, including one of the main characters. It was a huge disappointment, and following on the heels of the last disappointing book, has turned me off the series.
